Klasyfikacja ta zosta³a utworzona w 1855 roku z inicjatywy Napoleona III, który chcia³, aby lista najlepszych win produkowanych w ró¿nych rejonach Francji, zosta³a zaprezentowana podczas wielkiej paryskiej wystawy - Paris Universal Exhibition. Bordowska Izba Handlowo-Przemys³owa powierzy³a to zadanie Syndykatowi Brokerów, którzy stworzyli klasyfikacjê w oparciu o obserwacjê i analizê najlepiej sprzedaj±cych siê win na rynku. System ten zawiera jedynie wina czerwone z 60 posiad³o¶ci w Médoc i jedn± z Graves. Ca³a klasyfikacja jest podzielona na 5 kategorii. ( pierwsze , drugie, trzecie, czwarte i pi±te "Cru" ).
